The peripheral nervous system includes nerves in your arms and legs. Neuropathy is nerve damage, and peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage in the peripheral nerves. This damage affects different types of peripheral nerves, including those that transmit sensations, control muscles and regulate certain bodily functions.
Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy
This condition causes various symptoms in the feet and toes which should not be ignored-particularly by those with diabetes. The earlier peripheral neuropathy is diagnosed and treated the better, in order to avoid permanent damage. Symptoms may include:
- Loss of sensation in the feet
- Pain, or tingling sensations in the feet
- Weakness or balance problems
- Wounds on the feet that do not heal
What Causes Peripheral Neuropathy?
Although diabetes is the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy, it may also occur due to the following factors:
- Injury
- Neurological disorders
- Old age
- Arthritis
- Certain medicines
- A family history of peripheral neuropathy
- Alcoholism
While there is no cure for peripheral neuropathy, your podiatrist can help slow its progression, manage its symptoms, improve your foot health, and possibly even help you avoid further complications.
